I found a bonehew the other day, and I'm quite taken with it, specifically the idea of a necromancer wielding it, and firing off partially synergized bone spears from it.
With 40 Points in prison and wall, 1 point in perquisites, the bone spear reaches 557-588 damage a pop, according to this skill calculator.
Taking some strategies from the Acrid AxeMancer, we can use the bone runeword, and get a pretty good defense against physical damage.
I have a few questions though:
1. What happens when both the 15% chance to cast lvl 10 bone spear and 50% chance to cast lvl 16 bone spear proc. Do they stack and we get a lvl 26 bone spear, do we cast two separate bone spears, or do we cast only one, and if so, which one?
2. I can see a lot of problems with this build already, one of which being elemental resistances due to the lack of a shield, and the other being efficiency in killing. What would you guys recommend to alleviate those?
3. I've only used 44 skill points so far. What do you think the rest should go into? I'm hesitant to fully synergize the bone tree, as at that point, it would be more useful to just cast the bone spears than hit stuff, which ruins the fun of going melee. Since this is for PvM, Corpse Explosion is probably getting near maxed. I guess after that, or before it, it could go into a summoning build. Curses also offer some interesting options.
EDIT: Just discovered the Oath runeword >_<. Well, that's probably going to be much better than bonehew. Only need a mal now, and to reinstall the rune word mod. So much for the thread title.|||As for the ctcs, I do not believe that they stack like "aura when equipped". I have tried to make a "meleemancer" with a golem as a help with crowd control but I need a good enough weapon. I used a shield.... I guess you can 20 IG and Golem mastery with 1 in Summon Resist. I used a "Pride" rw in my golem, a faith merc, and I used Passion/Grief... it wasn't very "damaging" in /p8 but in /p1 it was decent... Also, 1 pt in Amp.. You'll need it. CE is nice.. I reccomend about 5-20 pts... depending on how many skill+'s you have and how much you plan to use it.|||Its the bonemason build, search for posts by ssog on here or AB forums for closer info|||If you're not set on melee, there is also Brand bow runeword. It can hit 10 frames(as good as the best Oath) and offers 100% ctc lvl 18 bone spear.|||Brand could be the worst weapon ever and id still want it on my merc just because it looks so cool|||Brand sounds alot more practical. I don't imagine trying to slash frenzytaurs with a 2-hander....
Even with a synergized bone armor and wearing bone runeword seems impractical, just because your missing a shield. So much can happen in a blink of an eye, even more so when your missing 70-75% block from a shield.|||would brand really get the synergies from your skills?|||Quote:

Welcome!
The %ctc will stack only if the spells are of the same level and same type (on hit vs on attack) as far as I know. If both ctc procs, I do believe you get two Bone Spears firing.
As for resistances, cheap yet effective options include the 'Treachery' runeword (Fade proc gives +60 resistance) and Kira's Guardian (+50 to +70 resistance). If you're only after the main two (fire, lightning) resistances, Laying of Hands/Aldur's Advance both give +50 fire resistance (Aldur's ranges from 40 to 50). Highlord's Wrath gives +35 resistance, Natalya's Soul gives up to +25 lightning resistance, and you can always combo Aldur's Advance and Aldur's Deception for up to +50 fire/lightning resistance, 150% AR (!), and a massive bonus to stats. Partial Immortal King (belt, gloves, boots) also gives AR, fire/lightning resistance, and stats.
Regarding skill progression, it amuses me that you feel that pumping CE/summons would not ruin the "melee" concept, yet synergizing bone skills further would. Imho, CE ruins the "melee" concept completely - you are no longer a Meleemancer, but rather, a CEMancer. If it were up to me, I'd synergize the bone spells further (just use self-control to not use them) to get a more powerful ctc Bone Spear/Bone Spirit. In addition, perhaps you could work on poison spells (Andariel's Visage, Carrion Wind) and their synergies. Lastly, curses are not one point wonders when it comes to Meleemancers. Whereas casters can get huge +skill bonuses, melee characters usually have to work on other aspects, and low level curses have low radius and some are nerfed in harder difficulties. Additional points help them greatly.
Avoid CE like the plague.

Why 20 IG? Additional points into IG does not add life or damage, but rather defence (useless) and Thorns (also useless).

Yes, it would.
