I run Chaos Sanctuary and WSK 2+3 and Throne of Destruction / Baal. Also Shenk or whatever his name is and the other guy Eldrich or whatever his name is and also Pindleskin. Also I run the pit in act 1 and sometimes the sewers in Upper Kurast as well as the small temple areas on the Causway and the council in Travincal.
In all of these places all I ever see drop is like a Hel or a Dol or something lower and I have ran them countless times. What do I do? Do I try cows or something? I need some kind of better strategy.
BTW I have no Enigma but do have a staff with about 41 teleport charges on it, which is expensive to repair, but I haven't had too much trouble with that. It helps me jump to Big D and Baal with a lot less hassle than trying to walk there.|||There isn't any best place for HRs, as far as I know. They're rare enough, that there's no point running for them anyway. Killing lots of stuff in WSK is the best bet, imo. You propably won't get any HRs, but chances are you'll get some good drops.
Though, rushing HFs and cubing is kinda reliable if you can do that..

Killing Council is pretty good too. It's fast, gives gold, and I believe chances of getting runes are quite good for time spent. I got Mal recently.. not quite HR, but still :P
There's even a spreadsheet on Travincal runes, apparently:

I just started replaying again recently, and have picked up both a Mal and a Vex doing chaos runs with some other players (usually hammerdin bots, lol). As you may know, rune drop isnt affected by magic find, but its an ilvl thing. I'd say just keep doing what you're doing, running those high level zones. It's all a matter of chance. Incidentally, 2 years back when I last played, I found a Vex in the countess' tower - but not actually ON the countess. You should run her as well.|||Quote:

I would run countess, but the layout of that place is bad for a summoner without Enigma and very very annoying lol.|||I know it's kinda OT, but i've been playing D2 since 03 or whenever, and I've self found 2 Hr's - both in Hell cows.
Hopefully the increase in drops will make other places good, apparently travi is good, but I've never really been a fan of the necro class so i dunno where is "necroable" - tho i'll give summoner another go this ladder once i've leveled up my zons/barbs/pallies & sorc

My thinking is that Hell Cows would probably be the best simply because of the sheer number of chances you have to get one to drop each run.
This is true. I saw a guide on the site somewhere a long time ago where they calculated everything out, and assuming a full clear of an area, your best bet for a high rune is hell cows. It is because of the exact reason you mention: While each individual cow isn't any more likely to drop a HR than a typical hell monster, there are just so many more cows that you will find in any other area of the game.|||The best way to get HRS is to farm items and trade for them. Period. There is no way to farm for HRs faster than buying the HRs via items.
