PVM / Poison Necromancer

[:1]First of all, I'd really appreciate people to give their opinion on this guide, or just post comments about it and discuss it.

So this a guide about making a PVM poison novamancer. Yeah, PVM, so if you're looking for some PVP guide don't read it ^^".

It'll go like this:

1 --> Stats

2 --> Skills

3 --> Gear

4 --> Merc

__________________________________________________ _______________

Stats

Strenght: If u don't know what i'm going to say...

Dexterity: Nothing! You don't need max block for this build.

Vitality: Everything goes in here. You'll need it.

Energy: Nothing!

__________________________________________________ _______________

Skills

Summoning spells

Clay golem : 1 point

Golem mastery : 1 point

Summon resist : 1 point

That's all the points you need for this section!

With only 1 point in those 3 skills, you can summon a clay golem with 9K+ life, good resist, good def, and that slows ennemis by 60+%. He won't die even in 8 player games (unless you let him alone in a crowd of champions but duh -_- ).

Some people could think that fire golem is better because his aura will finish the ennemis with 1 point of life left; but that's useless, because we're talking about monsters, not other players. In PVP, u have to hit two times because the player will be left 1 point of life, but against monsters, when they are poisonned and have no more life, they just die, as simple as that.

Curses

All prerequisites : 1 point

Lower resist : 1 point. You're going to use that skill. Even with only 1 point in it, it will lower ennemi's resists by 60+% for more than 60 seconds (more than enough).

Poison and bones spells

All prerequisites : 1 point

Poison dagger : 20 points. This is a synergy for your main attack.

Poison explosion : 20 points. This is a synergy for your main attack.

Poison nova : 20 points. This IS you main attack!

Bone spirit OR bone spear : all the rest

Bone prison OR bone wall : all the rest

These are your skills you're going to use against poison immune monsters. Let me explain myself. You will already have 1 point in bone armor, and instead of putting more points in it, its actually better to put points in bone prison or bone wall for the synergy (+15 dmg absorb > +10 dmg absorb). For bone spear and bone spirit, it's up to you to choose the skill you prefer. IMO bone spirit is better because you don't have to aim and i like that, but as i said, it's up to you. Don't put points in both though, that's a waste. The good thing here is that when you put points into bone prison or wall, it's also a synergy for bone spirit and spear.

The good thing here is that your character will continue upgrading until lvl 99. If we count taking out the bone skills for immunes, this build is done at lvl 72. That means after lvl 72, you will be upping skills for defense (bone armor synergies) and for immunes until lvl 99.

Gear

Now the interesting (and controversial) part of the guide : the gear .

Weapon : Death's Web

+50% Damage to Undead

-40-50% To Enemy Poison Resistance

+7-12 To Mana After Each Kill

+7-12 Life After Each Kill

+2 To All Skills

+1-2 To Poison and Bone Spells (Necromancer Only)

There is no way someone can object here. This is the wand you want, believe me.Socket it with a 5/5 psn facet.

If you can't afford it, a Hoto will do the job, or even any necro wand that gives +skills.

Shield : Homunculus

Defense: 177-213

Chance to Block: 72%

+150-200% Enhanced Defense

+5 To Mana After Each Kill

40% Increased Chance to Block

30% Faster Block Rate

+2 To Necromancer Skill Levels

+20 To Energy

Regenerate Mana 33%

All Resistances +40

+2 To Curses (Necromancer Only)

This is a good shield for you. If you lack resists, you can socket it with an Um (even if it's already +40 all resist), or with a 5/5 psn facet if you want more damage.

Another option would be a 20/20 poison monarch, but personally i prefer Homunculus. Spirit would do the job too.

If you can't afford that, any necro shield with + good skills will be ok.

Armor : Enigma Mage Plate

+2 To All Skills

+45% Faster Run/Walk

+1 To Teleport

+750-775 Defense

+ (0.75 Per Character Level) +0-74 To Strength

Increase Maximum Life 5%

Damage Reduced By 8%

+14 Life After Each Kill

15% Damage Taken Goes To Mana

+ (1 Per Character Level) +1-99% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

You need this, because you want to teleport. Also, they are other nice mods in there (8% dr, +2 skills), especially the huge strenght boost it gives you. If you make your enigma in a mage plate (55 strg req), you won't even need to put a single point in strengh because your charms will give you enough strengh to wear it.

If you don't like teleporting (wtf), then bramble is for you : +50% psn dmg and lvl 21 thorns is nice to have.

If you can't afford those, use Skin of the Vipermagi (resists, skill, fcr, ...)

Helm : Necro circlet

Use a necro circlet with nice mods on it (+2 skills, fcr, strengh, resists, ...). Try to find one with 2 sockets, so you will pu 2 x 5/5 psn facets in there.

If you can't afford that, use a shako socketed with a 5/5 psn facet, it's still great for you and won't really change that much.

Gloves : Trang-Oul's Claws

+20% Faster Cast Rate

Cold Resist +30%

+30 Defense

+25% Poison Skill Damage

+2 To Curses (Necromancer Only)

The mods speak by themselves.. and those are quite cheap so they're easy to find.

Belt : Arachnid Mesh

+90-120% Enhanced Defense

Slows Target By 10%

+1 To All Skills

+20% Faster Cast Rate

Increases Maximum Mana 5%

Level 3 Venom (11 Charges)

Thats the belt you need, because of the +skill and the +fcr. A dungo would do the job though, it has nice dmg reduction and life boost. Those two are quite easy to find.

Boots : Sandstorm Trek

+140-170% Enhanced Defense

+20% Faster Hit Recovery

+20% Faster Run/Walk

+ (1 Per Character Level) +1-99 Maximum Stamina (Based On Character Level)

+10-15 To Strength

+10-15 To Vitality

50% Slower Stamina Drain

Poison Resist +40-70%

Repairs 1 Durability In 20 Seconds

+Fhr, strenght and vitality are great mods. Try to find an eth pair of those, and it'll be perfect. But boots really are not an important part of this build. You could as well be using any boots you like and still pass smoothly through hell.

Amulet : Mara's Kaleidoscope

+2 To All Skills

All Resistances +20-30

+5 To All Attributes

That's just what you need, because you will be lacking resist, and anyway it's the best. If you happen to find a +2 skill + nice mods necro amulet, use it, it's great.

If you can't afford those, use a plain +3 skills necro amulet, it costs nothing.

Rings : 2 x Stone of Jordan

+1 to All Skills

+25% Mana

+1-12 Lightning damage

+20 Mana

You won't complain if you got one of them in each of your fingers.

You could also use a ravenfrost if you don't like being frozen, but that's kind of useless IMO.

Charms :

Hellfire torch:

5% Chance to cast level 10 Firestorm on attack

+3 to Skill Levels

+10-20 to All Attributes

All Resistances +10 - 20

+8 to Light Radius

Level 30 Hydra (10/10 Charges)

Annihilus:

+1 To All Skills

+10-20 To All Attributes

All Resistances +10-20

+5-10% To Experience Gained

PnB Gcs w/ life or w/ fhr

"20 life/5 all resist" Scs. If you can't afford those, use Scs w/ 20 life alone are w/ 5 all resist alone.

Overall best gear

  • Death's Web

    Homunculus

    MP Enigma

    Necro +2skill circlet w/ mods

    Trang-Oul's Claws

    Arachnid Mesh

    Sandstrom Trek

    Mara's Kaleidoscope

    SoJs

Charms (at least Annihilus and Torch)

With that gear on, you can expect to deal over 12k damage with poison nova over 2 seconds, over 90k damage with poison explosion over 12+ seconds (that'll kill anyone who passes through that gaz), over 1,5k damage with bone spirit, your spell for immunes, lower resists by 60+%, and have a clay golem w/ 8000+ life and good def/resists. Your resists will reach 75% (the max) if you have at least 3 x 5 all resist scs. You will pass through chaos like butter (but forget doing baal runs... half the monsters there are immune to poison)

Overall cheap gear

  • Hoto / +skill necro wand

Spirit (only cheap if you're on ladder) / Necro head shield w/ +skills

Skin of the vipermagi (drops easily)

    Shako

    Trang-Oul's Claws

Any belt (try to look for resists)

Any boots (try to look for resists)

+3 skill necro amulet (those are usually plain and easy to find)

Any rare rings (try look for resists, strenght, FCR)

Trang-Oul's set

  • Trang-Oul's Guise

    Trang-Oul's Scales

    Trang-Oul's Wing

    Trang-Oul's Girth

    Trang-Oul's Claws

Complete set bonuses

+3 To Necromancer Skill Levels

20% Life Stolen Per Hit

+3 To Fire Mastery

+10 To Meteor

+13 To Fire Wall

+18 To Fire Ball

+200 Defense

+100 To Mana

Regenerate Mana 60%

Replenish Life +5

All Resistances +50

Transforms into Vampire

Part Trang-Oul's set

Use Trang-Oul's gloves, shield and belt so you get nice bonuses and you can complete your gear with those equipements i listed on top.

Merc

Ok so here you have the choice, really. I'll just list the ones i use and find the more useful (my favorites).

Act 2 defensive nightmare :

This one really is my favorite. He's got a Holy Freeze aura that will keep you and him from dying because every monster around you will be frozen, so you can teleport where you want and just cast your poison novas at them.

Equip him with Etheral Fortitude, or an Etheral Shaftstop, with a Vampire Gaze or a Guillaume's Face (DO NOT USE ANDY'S VISAGE!! the poison nova released when he's struck will overcome yours, and since it's weaker, the monsters will have less damage!), and with any strong etheral poleaxe runeword. I personally like Etheral Obedience , because it's really a boss killer weapon, but anything will do it. He could use a Bonehew w/ 2 x amn in it and he won't die.

Act 2 defensive hell :

This one is great too. Defiance aura will provide you and him with a good defence boost, which will keep him from dying too. Use the same gear as the Holy Freeze merc.

Act 2 offensive nightmare :

If you want a merc that will really help you kill bosses, choose this one ; but remember that he will die more often because his aura (might) boosts his damage, nothing else. Be sure to use a strong weapon (Obedience!) if you want this to be useful. Also, use Guillaume's Face with this merc.

Thank you everyone for reading my guide! Hope you'll enjoy your necro!

Also remember to post your toughts and opinions about this guide!

Tryzx |||nice to see someone recommend obedience for the merc for once!

nice guide, but it could use:

some suggestions on poor man's gear

ideas on levelling up the necro

full trangs build? it does make for a cool novamancer|||And how about the crowd control curses? dim vision? confuse? attract?

Would you ever need bone armour if you use any of those? I have never played a poison necro so i am just tossing out ideas here. but if you max dim vision for example, wouldent you be more safe with just that curse? or use attract?|||@monkfinger:

for the full trang build i just think it's better to use those i listed (more dmg), but still it'd make a good necro. And for the poor's man gear, if you look under each part of gear i said something like "if you can't afford that ... " . anyway, thx!

@cryton:

for the time it takes to tap on hotkey, cast the curse, tap on hotkey, cast lr, tap hotkey, cast nova... restart on new crowd.. imo it's long for nothing and with the HF merc you won't get hit that often, so you can just cast lr and nova and kill them all fast |||You do indeed, I was more thinking of a short list under the main section for quick reference, is all. Perhaps a list of things to look for in each gear slot, rather than a specific item.

Also, for a pvm char it seems at least moderately crazy not to drop a skill point on corpse explosion as a one point wonder.

A section on final nova damage would be handy, ie what you can expect with perfect gear / medium value stuff / poor mans gear.|||you've got a point ther monkfinger. ill try to add some lines.|||updated.

monkfinger if u got any explanations or something for the trang set, send them to me so i can add them under that part because i personally never used that ^^".|||Might be a bit late here, but my two cents:

For the Trang's option you might want to consider just three pieces: gloves, head, and one other (typically the belt) - generally the head and belt aren't too expensive so it's a discount option, and with three items the head gives a nice -25% to enemy poison resists and it still leaves your helm and armor slots open for a shako and your armor of choice.

Personally I prefer using a strong merc + Corpse Explosion to deal with unbreakable immunes rather than underpowered bone spells (maybe spreading some points in AI curses, and part of why I hate Holy Freeze mercs for Necros) but YMMV I guess.|||yeah CE is a very good option for immunes but idk i just don't like it lmao, i prefer my bone spirit w/ 1,5k dmg and a strong merc.

for the trang set when you say "head" you mean the shield right?|||Yes I meant the shield. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse.
